BAKEWELL–MONSAL TRAIL–LITTLE LONGSTONE–MONSAL HEAD AND VIADUCT–THORNBRIDGE–ASHFORD
Monsal-Matlock

Description:

We start our walk today in the famous Derbyshire town of BAKEWELL, and after passing through a couple of fields we join the Monsal Trail, which is the remains of the Derby to Buxton railway track. After a while we reach Hassop Station for our coffee stop. This is a popular venue with an excellent Café, bookshop and cycle hire. We continue along the Monsal Trail for another mile or so, before striking out on paths through fields, skirting the village of Great Longstone, and into Little Longstone, a very pretty village. A short roadside walk brings us to Monsal Head, where we can picnic with our Lunch Stop, whilst taking in the magnificent view of the Monsal Head Viaduct and Upperdale. After our Lunch Stop, we will descend to reach and have a look at the Via-duct. Leaving the viaduct we will walk through the Headstone Tunnel, this was one of the railway tunnels which was reopened to the public a few years ago, it is about 500 yards long and well lit. Shortly we leave the Monsal Trail to follow paths skirting the Thornbridge Hall Estate, the home of the Thornbridge Brewery. We continue along paths and a couple of lanes and meander our way into the pleasant village of Ashford in the Water, where we will visit the BULLS HEAD for a refreshment stop, whilst meeting up with the A and B walks. After our refreshment stop the coach will arrive to pick up the C walk members to travel to Bakewell where we will once again reunite with the A and B walkers at the end of their walks.
